Product Description
Raicilla has been made in Mexico for over 500 years and pre-dates the pre-hispanic era. In its early forms, it would have been classed as agave distilled spirit, akin to Mezcal. With its recent Denomination of Origin Protection in 2019, Raicilla as a stand-alone category is booming. La Venenosa Raicilla is the OG brand when it comes to Raicilla. The brand was created in 2011 by chef and Maestro Esteban Morales to bring these hidden Raicilla gems to the global market. In this expression, La Venenosa Puntas is considered the most prized and rare spirit. The Puntas in this case refers to the upper head portions of the agave hearts, it is the first run of upper liquid released in the first distillation. Commonly referred to as the heads. This Raicilla is 63% ABV (126 proof), but it is elegant, subtle, and incredibly complex. It’s produced by Gerardo Pena with agave Maximiliana in Jacales, Jalisco.

How It's Made
Gerardo Pena uses Maximiliana grown in Jacales, high in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Cooked in an adobe oven for 4 days using black oak timber it is then crushed and fermented in 200-litre oak vats with wild airborne yeast. Using his years of wine and Raicilla experience, El Lobo distils exclusively using stainless steel alembic stills, believing that this adds a slight steely oxidised character to the finish. Do not fear this high proof Raicilla, it is easy drinking yet extremely pronounced across the flavour spectrum. The length and acidity leave the mouth-watering, unlike any other Raicilla we have tried. We are honoured to exclusively import and share this brand with Australia.

Rocket ship is right. Never had a spirit in this catagory quite like it. If it came in larger formats I’d happily order a handle, but that would be dangerous. You have force yourself to sip this because it’s too easy to glug.

Another masterpiece from esteban morales, how can this high proof monster (63.3%) have no detectable alchahol on the nose? Not necessarily complex but a unique offering of bubblegum, cotton candy, apple and plenty of spice, I wouldn’t argue it’s missing some of the vegetal, fruit, funk, cheese and earthiness of other la venenosa offerings but it’s hitting those sweet and spicy notes like no other.

Nothing about the spirit screams 63% abv, truly smooth and complex. The nose is full of umami with lots of funky flavour and strangely pleasing from start to finish.

One of the most incredible things you’ll ever experience. If you’re in Sydney, you can try it out at Cantina OK. The worst thing about it is how it hits your wallet, because 1 bottle just ain’t enough!
